What 1,000 YouTube transcripts cost from a cloud server (2026)

The problem

youtube-transcript-api (or the npm youtube-transcript) works on your laptop and then fails on AWS, GCP, Azure, Vercel or GitHub Actions with RequestBlocked / IpBlocked. The library's maintainer says why in the README: YouTube blocks most IPs known to belong to cloud providers, and recommends rotating residential proxies (youtube-transcript-api README). More background: RequestBlocked / IpBlocked guide.

Option A: rotating residential proxies (do it yourself)

Verified price (Nov 1, 2026): Webshare Rotating Residential costs $3.50/GB on the 1 GB plan, falling to $1.40/GB at 3,000 GB, billed monthly (webshare.io/pricing). Webshare's free plan and "Proxy Server" plans are datacenter IPs, which YouTube also blocks, so they don't solve this (maintainer's comment in issue #593).

Bandwidth per transcript (our estimate): each fetch loads the video's watch page and then the caption track. We downloaded one watch page from a server on Nov 1, 2026 and it was about 0.32 MB (compressed). Add the caption file and the retries the library makes when an IP is blocked, and 0.3–0.6 MB per transcript is a fair working range. Measure your own traffic before you commit.

Plan $/GB ~GB per 1,000 transcripts ~Cost per 1,000
1 GB plan $3.50 0.3–0.6 $1.05–$2.10
3,000 GB plan $1.40 0.3–0.6 $0.42–$0.84

The smallest plan costs at least its monthly minimum, even if you fetch only a few transcripts. You also own the retry logic, the proxy credentials and the error handling.

Best when you fetch tens of thousands of transcripts a month and are happy to maintain proxy code.

Option B: hosted Apify Actor (ShepHouse, paid)

ShepHouse YouTube Transcript Scraper (Bulk) charges $0.0025 per delivered transcript, so $2.50 per 1,000 (Store page).

Best when you want transcripts in a pipeline this week, at hundreds to low thousands a month, without running proxy infrastructure. Other Apify Store transcript Actors exist at a range of prices; compare them on the Store.

Option C: the $29 RAG Starter Kit (ShepHouse, paid, one-time)

The YouTube Transcript → RAG Starter Kit is $29 one-time (file download). It is code, not a service: ingest, chunking and retrieval wired together. Transcript fetching still needs one of A or B on a cloud server, so the per-1,000 cost is A or B's, plus $29 once.

Best when your real goal is "ask questions over a channel's videos" and you'd rather not build the pipeline from scratch.

Summary

Per 1,000 transcripts Your work Failed videos
A. Rotating residential proxies ~$0.42–$2.10 (estimate, + plan minimum) Proxy setup, retries, monitoring You pay the bandwidth
B. ShepHouse Actor $2.50 One API call Not charged
C. Starter kit A or B's cost + $29 once Configure the kit Depends on A/B

At high volume, proxies usually cost less per transcript. At low volume, or when your time costs more than the difference, a hosted option is simpler. Pick the one that fits your volume.
